The parish of Medjugorje was founded back in the 19th century. This little place in Herzegovina lived peacefully and not much different from other places in the region. That changed on 24th June 1981. From that day, according to testimony the apparitions of Blessed Virgin Mary began , whose first appearance was seen by six children on Apparition Hill.
Medjugorje has since become one of the most famous Marian shrines in the world.
Every year its visited by more than a million pilgrims from all over the world, where they find peace, hope and feel the warmth that radiates from this place. On a daily basis pilgrims can attend the Holy Masses in various languages, as well as the confessions on the languages of the pilgrims. In addition, there are numerous gatherings of the faithful such as the International Youth Festival.
Church of St. James is the centar of gathering in the sanctuary of Queen of Peace, which is the official name of Meğugorje shrine. Around the church there is a large sitting area that can receive the faithful. Every pilgrim should definitely visit the Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain, which are also places of taking prayers.
